Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) is stepping up its market intervention and festive-season operations, targeting sales of ₹400 crore in August as demand rises ahead of Onam.

Supplyco Managing Director V.M. Jayakrishnan said the corporation recorded sales of ₹220 crore in July, marking a 10% increase over its average monthly sales during the previous six months. The number of customers also rose to around 37 lakh.

The corporation expects the Onam season to provide further momentum, with a combination of subsidised essentials, promotional offers, district-level fairs and special retail initiatives planned across Kerala.

Strengthening Price Intervention

Supplyco continues to play a key role in controlling the impact of rising retail prices by supplying 13 essential commodities at subsidised rates. Rice and other everyday necessities are offered at prices significantly below prevailing market rates.

The corporation also provides discounts on several non-subsidised branded products, with prices generally kept around 5% to 25% below market levels. Through these interventions, Supplyco aims to provide consumers with affordable alternatives while helping moderate price pressures in the wider market.

Tighter Quality Controls

Quality assurance remains another area of focus for the corporation. Supplyco follows predefined specifications when procuring products, while its quality-control team conducts inspections at different stages of the supply chain.

Large consignments, including products delivered in sacks, are sampled and tested before being accepted into inventory. Products that fail to meet the required standards are rejected.

Supplyco officials said complaints regarding product quality are also investigated promptly. Where necessary, samples are collected and sent to laboratories under the Centre for Food Research and Development (CFRD) for testing, followed by appropriate action based on the findings.

Three Mega Trade Fairs for Onam

Supplyco is expanding its festive retail strategy this year by organising mega trade fairs at three locations — Kozhikode Beach, the Helipad Ground at Kaloor Stadium in Ernakulam, and Putharikandam Maidan in Thiruvananthapuram.

Alongside a 4,000-square-foot Supplyco outlet, the fairs will feature stalls covering a wide range of categories, including Milma products, vegetables, textiles, footwear, food products, public-sector offerings and automobiles.

The state-level inauguration of the mega trade fair is scheduled for August 8.

District-level Supplyco fairs will also be held at major locations in the remaining 11 districts from August 14 to 25. In addition, constituency-level fairs are planned across the state from August 21 to 25.

Special Onam Kits

To meet seasonal demand, Supplyco will offer three different Onam kits through its retail network.

The Atham Onam Gift Kit, containing 21 products including rice, coconut oil, sugar and Shabari spices, will be priced at ₹1,000. The Uthradam Kit, with 25 products, will cost ₹1,500, while the premium Thiruvonam Kit, containing 30 items, will be available for ₹2,000.

The festive initiatives are aimed at easing consumer pressure during the peak Onam shopping period while helping contain excessive price increases in the market.

Maveli Stores Set for a Retail Upgrade

Supplyco is also working to modernise its traditional Maveli Store network by converting selected outlets into larger-format ‘Super Stores’.

Many existing Maveli Stores operate from relatively small premises, limiting customers’ ability to browse and select products independently. The proposed Super Stores will offer more spacious retail environments with self-service facilities.

The upgraded outlets are also expected to carry a wider range of branded products and product categories, giving consumers greater choice beyond the traditional subsidised grocery model.

24-Hour Convenience Stores Planned

As part of its effort to adapt to changing consumer habits, Supplyco is also planning 24-hour convenience stores at high-footfall locations such as bus terminals and railway stations.

Vyttila Mobility Hub in Kochi is being considered for the first such outlet, with steps already under way to convert the existing Supplyco store there into a round-the-clock convenience store.

With higher sales, expanded festive operations and a push towards modern retail formats, Supplyco is seeking to strengthen its position as both a price-control mechanism and a more competitive consumer retail network in Kerala.
