WhatsApp is expanding its payments ecosystem in India with a new Bill Payments feature that allows users to manage and pay a wider range of household and utility bills without leaving the messaging platform.

The Meta-owned messaging service introduced the feature in India on Thursday, adding bill payments to its growing range of financial services. The new facility is powered by Bharat Connect, the country’s interoperable bill payment network.

Through the service, users will be able to access bills from 22,722 billers across 30 categories. These include electricity, gas and water bills, as well as FASTag, insurance, credit card payments and loan repayments.

The move strengthens WhatsApp’s position as a platform for everyday financial transactions, potentially reducing the need for users to switch between multiple apps to manage routine payments.

How WhatsApp bill payments work

The new Bill Payments section can be accessed from the rupee symbol at the top of the WhatsApp home screen. Users can select the relevant bill category and then choose their biller.

After entering and confirming their account details, WhatsApp will retrieve the applicable bill amount. Users can review the amount before completing the payment.

The feature supports multiple payment methods, including UPI, debit cards and credit cards, giving users flexibility in choosing how they settle their bills.

A single place for household bills

WhatsApp is also introducing a Household Bills Summary to make recurring payments easier to manage.

Billers that users have paid previously will appear on the Payments home screen, allowing them to return to a particular payment with a single tap. The feature also allows multiple accounts to be managed under the same biller.

This could be particularly useful for users who handle bills for more than one property, family member or workplace. Instead of searching for each service every time a payment is due, users can access previously used billers directly through the payments interface.

30 categories available

WhatsApp will automatically display frequently used bill categories on the Payments home screen, while a “See All” option will provide access to additional categories.

The range covers some of the most common recurring payments made by households and individuals, including utility bills and financial obligations.

WhatsApp had already introduced payment-related services in India, including mobile recharges. The expansion into a broader bill-payment ecosystem represents another step in the company’s effort to make the app more useful for routine financial activities.

Rollout to Android and iOS users

The new bill-payment service will not reach everyone at once. WhatsApp said the feature will be rolled out gradually in India, with Android and iOS users expected to receive access over the coming weeks.

By bringing thousands of billers and multiple payment categories into a familiar messaging platform, WhatsApp is looking to make recurring payments more convenient while strengthening its presence in India’s rapidly expanding digital payments market.

For consumers, the biggest attraction may be simplicity: bills can be discovered, checked and paid from the same app they already use every day.
