Shares of gold-focused non-banking financial companies gained ground on Thursday as a fresh rise in gold prices lifted investor sentiment towards lenders that rely heavily on gold-backed loans.
Muthoot Finance was among the top movers, climbing as much as 4.83% to ₹2,997.30 during intraday trading. Manappuram Finance also advanced, rising up to 3.29% to ₹351.55.
By 11:45 am, Muthoot Finance was trading around 4% higher at ₹2,973.60, while Manappuram Finance had gained 1.98% to ₹347.10.
The movement came as domestic gold prices continued to trade at elevated levels. MCX Gold futures were up 0.26% at ₹1,58,403, after touching an intraday high of ₹1,58,750. The contract’s reported all-time high stands at ₹1,84,650.
Why Higher Gold Prices Matter
For gold-loan companies, rising bullion prices can strengthen the value of the assets pledged by borrowers. Since gold serves as collateral, an increase in its market value can provide lenders with an additional layer of security.
Higher gold prices can also increase the borrowing capacity against a given quantity of pledged gold, subject to applicable loan-to-value restrictions. This can potentially support fresh loan disbursements and help lenders expand their gold-loan assets under management.
The benefit, however, is not automatic. The impact of higher gold prices on earnings will depend on several factors, including the pace of gold-loan growth, lending yields, borrowing and funding costs, and the quality of the underlying loan book.
Investor Focus Shifts to Gold-Loan Growth
The latest movement in Muthoot Finance and Manappuram Finance reflects the close relationship between bullion prices and the outlook for gold-focused lenders.
A sustained period of elevated gold prices could provide a favourable operating environment for the sector, particularly if borrowers continue to use their gold holdings to access liquidity.
At the same time, investors will be watching whether higher collateral values translate into stronger loan growth and improved financial performance rather than merely providing a valuation cushion.
For now, the rally in gold has given shares of the two major gold financiers a fresh boost, with market attention likely to remain focused on bullion prices and the resulting trends in gold-loan demand.
