Kochi Water Metro has achieved another milestone in India’s sustainable transport journey by becoming the country’s first water metro project to initiate a carbon credit validation process. The initiative aims to scientifically measure the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions generated through its electric ferry services and convert those environmental benefits into a new source of revenue.
To implement the project, Kochi Water Metro Limited (KWML) has appointed Bengaluru-based environmental consultancy Kosher Climate through a competitive tender process. The partnership follows a revenue-sharing model that requires no upfront investment from the Water Metro.
Under the agreement, Kosher Climate will bear the complete cost of carbon credit certification, technical assessments, documentation, and regulatory approvals. Once the carbon credits are certified and traded in international carbon markets, 71% of the revenue generated will be shared with Kochi Water Metro, while the agency will receive the remaining share.
The carbon credits will be calculated based on the reduction in emissions achieved by replacing conventional diesel-powered boats and road transport with the Water Metro’s fully electric vessels. Every passenger choosing the electric service contributes to lowering carbon emissions, and these reductions will be scientifically measured and independently verified under internationally recognised standards.
Following certification, the verified carbon credits can be sold in global carbon markets, allowing the environmental impact of the project to be monetised.
KWML believes the initiative will strengthen the financial sustainability of the Water Metro while supporting Kerala’s clean mobility goals. As global regulations on emissions become stricter and demand for verified carbon credits continues to grow, the project could emerge as a significant long-term revenue stream alongside its environmental benefits.
