IndiGo has expanded its cargo network from Kerala with the launch of a scheduled freighter service connecting Cochin International Airport with Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.
The new route is being operated using an Airbus A321 freighter and is initially scheduled once a week. IndiGo plans to increase the frequency to three services a week as the route develops, providing exporters with additional capacity for shipments to the UAE and wider Gulf markets.
The service is expected to support businesses handling commercial cargo as well as goods that require faster and more predictable transportation. Sharjah’s connectivity with other markets across the UAE and the Gulf could also give Kerala-based exporters another logistics route for reaching customers in the region.
For exporters in Kerala, the new freighter link could be particularly relevant for sectors where delivery time and cargo handling conditions are critical. Cochin International Airport currently handles a range of cargo through its facilities, including perishables such as fruits and vegetables, seafood, pharmaceuticals, garments and other time-sensitive commercial shipments.
S. Suhas IAS, Managing Director of Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL), said the new service would create additional opportunities for Kerala’s exporters and industries seeking access to Gulf markets.
The launch was marked by a ceremony attended by senior officials from CIAL and IndiGo. Representatives included CIAL Airport Director Manu G., Executive Directors Saji Daniel and Santhosh J. Poovathil, and Cargo Head Satheesh Kumar Pai. IndiGo was represented by Cargo Vice President Vipin Kumar Mohla, Associate Vice President – Sales (West & South) Biju Shankar, Director – Cargo Operations (West & South) Jubilant Johnson and Director – Sales (North & East) Satish Mishra.
The addition of a dedicated scheduled freighter connection to Sharjah strengthens Kochi’s role as a cargo gateway for Kerala, particularly as businesses look for efficient air links to the Gulf for high-value and time-sensitive shipments. The planned increase in frequency could further improve cargo capacity between Kerala and the region.
