Kochi: Mahesh Muralidhar Pai has taken charge as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of South Indian Bank, marking a leadership transition at the Kerala-based private sector lender.

Pai assumed office on October 1, 2026, for a three-year term. His appointment was approved by the Reserve Bank of India and subsequently by the bank’s shareholders. South Indian Bank had also appointed him as an Officer on Special Duty from September 16 to September 30 to facilitate a smooth transition and familiarise him with the bank’s operations, governance framework and key functions.

The appointment brings an experienced banker with nearly three decades of industry experience to the top position at South Indian Bank. Pai, who was previously Chief General Manager at Canara Bank, has worked across several areas of banking, including strategy, governance, treasury, foreign exchange, retail banking, agriculture and MSME credit.

At Canara Bank, Pai was involved in digital banking and innovation initiatives and also played a role in setting up the bank’s gold loan vertical. His career has included exposure to business leadership, credit and operational management across different markets, as well as international banking operations.

Pai’s appointment comes as South Indian Bank begins a new phase following the completion of P.R. Seshadri’s tenure as Managing Director and CEO. Seshadri retired from the bank after the close of business on September 30, 2026.

The leadership change places Pai at the helm of a bank that has been working on strengthening its business franchise, with areas such as MSME lending, digital banking and operational efficiency forming part of its broader business focus. His experience across traditional banking functions and digital initiatives is expected to be relevant as the lender continues to develop its growth strategy.

For South Indian Bank, the appointment also represents a continuation of its efforts to strengthen leadership and execute its business priorities in a changing banking environment. Pai’s three-year tenure will now provide the framework for the bank’s next phase of strategic and operational initiatives.
