As Kerala continues to strengthen its position as one of India’s leading tourism destinations, visitors from the Gulf region are emerging as one of the state’s most valuable tourism segments. Their growing presence, particularly during the monsoon season, is creating significant opportunities for the hospitality, retail, and travel industries.

Today, travelers from Arab countries account for more than 15 percent of Kerala’s international tourist arrivals. More importantly, they are among the highest-spending visitors to the state, contributing substantially to local economies through accommodation, dining, shopping, and leisure activities.

What makes the Gulf market especially important is its alignment with Kerala’s tourism calendar. While June to August is traditionally considered an off-season period due to the monsoon, it coincides with peak summer temperatures across the Middle East. For many Gulf families, Kerala’s cool climate, green landscapes, and rain-soaked hill stations offer an attractive seasonal escape.

Industry estimates indicate that a typical Gulf tourist spends around $5,000 on a Kerala vacation, with larger family groups often generating significantly higher tourism revenue. Their spending extends far beyond hotel stays, benefiting restaurants, retail outlets, handicraft businesses, fashion stores, wellness centers, and luxury resorts.

The numbers underline the market’s potential. More than 120,000 visitors arrived from Gulf countries last year alone. Oman contributed the largest share, followed by Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Destinations such as Kochi, Athirappilly, Kumarakom, Munnar, Thekkady, and Wayanad continue to attract strong interest from these travelers, helping sustain tourism activity during months that were once considered lean periods.

Tourism experts believe this success story is only beginning. With increasing air connectivity, strong cultural ties, and a large Malayali diaspora across the Gulf region, countries such as Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE represent one of the most promising growth avenues for Kerala tourism in the coming years.

As global tourism trends evolve, the Gulf market is proving to be more than just a source of visitors. It is becoming a strategic economic opportunity—one that has the potential to drive year-round tourism growth, support local businesses, and strengthen Kerala’s position as a preferred international travel destination.
