From Business to Medicine
Gangadharan was born in Coimbatore as the youngest of four children to M. N. Padmanabhan Nair and Saraswathi Amma. His father was a textile engineer and was involved in the textile business.
After completing his pre-degree studies at Christ College, Irinjalakuda, and graduation from Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, Gangadharan initially joined his father’s textile business in Coimbatore.
However, business was not the path he wanted to pursue. He eventually left the family business and chose medicine instead — a decision that would shape the rest of his life.
He studied medicine at Government Medical College, Kottayam, and later at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. His medical training provided the foundation for a career that would eventually take him into the specialised field of oncology.
Specialising in Cancer Care
Cancer treatment requires more than medical expertise alone. Patients often face long treatment periods, expensive medicines, uncertainty and significant emotional pressure. Gangadharan’s career has reflected an understanding of these wider challenges.
He underwent further training at internationally recognised institutions, including The Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton, London, and George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C.
His professional career later included service at the Regional Cancer Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, where he served as Head of the Department.
Through his work as an oncologist, he became closely associated with cancer treatment and with efforts to make support available to patients from economically weaker backgrounds.
A Cancer Care Movement
One of the most significant chapters in Gangadharan’s career came with the formation of the Cochin Cancer Society in 2004.

In 2012, he received the Kairali Ananthapuri Award from the Ananthapuri Group in Muscat for social service.
He was honoured with the Basheer Award in 2015 by the Qatar-based Pravasi Doha organisation.
In 2017, he received the NSH Global Harmony Award from NSH Global Village Harmony in Kuwait.
These recognitions reflect the wider appreciation for his contribution to cancer care and social service, including among Malayalis living outside Kerala.
Kerala Sree Honour
One of the most significant recognitions of his career came in 2023, when the Government of Kerala selected V. P. Gangadharan for the Kerala Sree Award.
The Kerala Awards were introduced to recognise outstanding contributions in different areas of public life. Kerala Sree is the third-highest civilian honour under the state awards.
For Gangadharan, the honour recognised a career that combined medical expertise with a strong commitment to helping people facing cancer.
