Kochi: South Korea’s skincare industry has become a global beauty phenomenon, and now a Kerala-born entrepreneur is looking to bring that expertise to Indian consumers through a homegrown brand built around Korean formulations.

Dr Aarthi Pillai, a paediatrician and daughter of businessman Ravi Pillai, has launched The Heart Cosmetics, a skincare brand that combines Korean formulations and ingredients with a simplified approach to everyday skincare. The products are manufactured entirely in South Korea.

The brand currently offers four skincare products and two lip oils, with its portfolio designed around what the founders describe as a “barrier-first” approach — focusing on protecting and maintaining the skin’s natural barrier while addressing multiple skincare concerns.

From Medicine to Beauty Entrepreneurship

Although entrepreneurship had been on Dr Aarthi’s mind for years, she initially chose medicine as her career. Her own experience with skin problems after childbirth eventually prompted her to explore the skincare industry more seriously.

Balancing her medical career and motherhood made elaborate skincare routines difficult, she said. This led her to consider whether a smaller number of multifunctional products could address several skin concerns without requiring consumers to spend considerable time on their routines.

Her research into international skincare trends eventually brought her attention to Korean skincare, particularly its formulations and ingredient-focused approach. That interest became the starting point for developing products based on Korean expertise.

Three Years of Research

Dr Aarthi founded The Heart Cosmetics together with her husband, Dr Aditya Vishnu. The couple spent around three years studying and researching formulations before bringing the brand to market.

The research focused particularly on products designed to support the skin barrier rather than relying solely on solutions for individual skin concerns.

The Heart Cosmetics was launched commercially in September last year, initially on a relatively small scale. Instead of pursuing rapid expansion from the outset, the founders focused on building a customer community and understanding how consumers responded to the products.

That early approach has now laid the groundwork for the brand’s next phase of growth.

Korean Manufacturing, Indian Ambition

A key part of The Heart Cosmetics’ positioning is its South Korean manufacturing base. All six products currently offered by the brand are manufactured in South Korea, while the business is being developed with the Indian market in mind.

The founders see growing consumer interest in Korean beauty as an opportunity to build a larger presence in India. Their immediate ambition is to expand The Heart Cosmetics from its early-stage presence into a pan-Indian skincare brand.

The brand’s products are currently available through its website, Amazon and Instagram, giving the company multiple digital channels to reach consumers beyond its initial market.

Building a Scalable Beauty Brand

The rise of K-beauty has created strong consumer interest in Korean skincare routines, ingredients and formulations across global markets. For The Heart Cosmetics, the strategy is to combine that Korean influence with a more practical proposition for Indian consumers.

Rather than positioning skincare solely around lengthy routines, the brand is built around products intended to address multiple needs while supporting the skin’s natural protective barrier.

For Dr Aarthi and Dr Aditya, the next stage will be about taking the lessons from the brand’s initial months in the market and scaling them nationally.

What began with a doctor’s personal experience and an interest in creating simpler skincare has now evolved into a consumer brand with ambitions to compete in India’s growing beauty and skincare market. With Korean manufacturing at its core and pan-India expansion as its next target, The Heart Cosmetics is positioning itself at the intersection of medical expertise, K-beauty and modern Indian skincare consumption.
