Kerala’s electric vehicle infrastructure is set for another significant boost as the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) moves ahead with plans to expand its fast-charging network across the state. The proposal aims to improve charging accessibility for EV owners while supporting the growing adoption of electric mobility.
The new phase of the project includes the installation of hundreds of high-speed charging points at more than 270 locations across Kerala. KSEB has also sought financial assistance under the Central Government’s PM E-DRIVE programme to support the expansion.
One of the most notable features of the upcoming rollout is the increased participation of private landowners. Instead of relying mainly on government-owned land, most of the proposed charging stations are expected to be established on privately owned sites through partnerships with landowners and charge point operators. This approach is expected to speed up deployment while making charging facilities available in more convenient locations.
The charging network will primarily focus on national highways, state highways and other high-traffic travel corridors, allowing EV users to undertake longer journeys with greater confidence.
The new stations are expected to feature high-capacity DC fast chargers capable of reducing charging times compared to many existing facilities. Alongside the new installations, KSEB is also considering upgrading several older charging stations with more powerful equipment to support the latest generation of electric vehicles.
Districts with higher vehicle density and increasing EV adoption are likely to receive a larger share of the new charging infrastructure, while efforts will also be made to strengthen connectivity in smaller districts and remote regions.
The expansion reflects Kerala’s broader push towards clean transportation and sustainable mobility. As the number of electric vehicles on the road continues to rise, improving charging infrastructure remains a key requirement for encouraging more consumers to switch to EVs.
With public and private collaboration playing a larger role, the proposed expansion is expected to improve charging convenience, reduce waiting times and strengthen Kerala’s position as one of India’s leading states in electric mobility development.
