NRE Fixed Deposits Continue to Attract NRIs with Tax-Free Returns and Competitive Interest Rates

04Jul
adminNews

Non-Resident External (NRE) Fixed Deposits remain one of the most popular investment options for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) looking to park their overseas earnings in India. Offering tax-free interest income, full repatriation of funds, and attractive interest rates, these deposits continue to provide a secure avenue for long-term savings.

One of the key advantages of an NRE Fixed Deposit is that it can be opened using funds remitted to India in any freely convertible foreign currency. The principal amount and the interest earned can be transferred back to the investor’s country of residence without restrictions, making the scheme particularly attractive for expatriates.

Interest earned on NRE Fixed Deposits is exempt from income tax in India, and banks do not deduct Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) on these deposits. However, investors may still be liable to pay taxes in their country of residence depending on local tax regulations.

Most banks also allow customers to open and manage NRE Fixed Deposits entirely through digital banking platforms, enabling NRIs to invest and monitor their deposits from anywhere in the world.

Unlike regular domestic fixed deposits, NRE Fixed Deposits do not offer additional interest benefits for senior citizens. Regardless of age, all eligible depositors receive the same applicable interest rate.

At present, interest rates on NRE Fixed Deposits generally range between 6.10% and 7.50% per annum, depending on the bank and the deposit tenure. Several banks currently offer their highest returns on deposits with maturities ranging from two to three years.

NRE Fixed Deposits can also be used as collateral for loans. Borrowers may avail themselves of loans in India or, through overseas branches of Indian banks, abroad. In certain cases, banks also permit loans against these deposits to third parties, subject to applicable regulations.

With tax-efficient returns, flexible repatriation, and competitive interest rates, NRE Fixed Deposits continue to be a preferred investment option for NRIs seeking both capital protection and stable income from their overseas savings.\
