Bhima Bhattar: The Vision Behind the Brand
K. Lakshminarayanan Bhattar (27 July 1904 – 16 December 1985), commonly known as Bhima Bhattar, was an Indian industrialist and the founder of Bhima Jewellers. He was one of the first to introduce the concept of ready-made jewellery in Kerala. Along with his brothers, he started Bhima Jewellers in the Mullakkal area of Alappuzha. It was one of the first such enterprises in Kerala. He was also a co-founder of the All Kerala Gold and Silver Merchants Association.
He was born in 1904 in Udayavara near Udupi into a Shivalli Madhwa Brahmin family. Later, he moved to Alappuzha to stay with his sister’s husband. After school hours, he worked as an assistant at a restaurant called “Girija Niwas”. While working there, he also started a small trade in perfumes and cosmetic items.
He recognized that there was a market in Alappuzha for silver jewellery, cutlery, and pooja items. Based on this, he introduced a silver tumbler to the market, which became very popular. Later, the business grew, and there was high demand for 22-carat gold jewellery. He was one of the jewellers who first introduced ready-made gold jewellery in Kerala. He was also among the early diamond traders in Kerala and contributed to introducing Navaratna jewellery.
