Early Life
Jilu Mol was born to Thomas and Annakutty as their second child. She lost her mother to blood cancer when she was around four and a half years old. Her father played an important role in encouraging her to grow up with confidence and independence.
She spent part of her childhood at Mercy Home for persons with disabilities in Changanassery. The institution provided her with an environment where education, creativity and independence were encouraged rather than restricted.
Her teachers and friends became an important part of her development. Instead of being treated as someone who needed to be protected from challenges, Jilu was encouraged to participate in activities alongside other students.
Learning to Do Things Differently
Jilu’s grandmother was among the people who encouraged her to use her feet for everyday activities. What began as a necessity gradually became a skill.
She learned to perform tasks that most people normally do with their hands, including drawing, writing and using a computer. Over time, she also learned to manage activities such as grooming and other aspects of daily life independently.
Art became particularly important to her. She discovered that her feet could become tools of creativity, allowing her to draw and paint with remarkable control.
From a Dream of Technology to Graphic Design
As a young girl, Jilu was fascinated by computers and initially dreamed of becoming a software engineer. Her interest eventually led her towards graphic design and animation.
She studied animation and graphic design at St. Joseph College of Communication in Changanassery. The course presented its own challenges, but Jilu completed her studies through sustained effort and determination.
Her education gave her the technical foundation to turn her creativity into a profession.
Building a Career
Finding employment was not easy. Jilu faced rejection from several workplaces, with her disability becoming a barrier in some of those opportunities.
She eventually gained professional experience as a graphic designer at Santhisoft Technology. She also worked as an office assistant at a hospital before moving into another chapter of her career at Viani Paintings in Ernakulam.
These experiences helped her establish herself not simply as someone overcoming a disability, but as a trained creative professional with skills that could stand on their own.
Finding Her Voice Through Art
Jilu’s artistic journey eventually led her to the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists Association. As a member, she has participated in exhibitions and developed her work as a foot painter.
Painting has given her more than a creative outlet. It has become an important part of her professional identity and a way of communicating her perspective to a wider audience.
Her achievements in painting have also brought recognition, including the MFPA Best Painter of the Year Award in 2021 and other honours such as the Youth Icon Award and Junior Helen Keller Award in Painting.
The Dream of Driving

She began pursuing a driving licence in 2014. The process proved complicated because she had to establish that a person without arms could legally and safely operate a vehicle.
After learning about people in other parts of India who drove without using their hands, Jilu continued pursuing the possibility of obtaining a licence. Legal proceedings eventually helped her move forward with the process.
She also worked with the authorities to modify a car according to her requirements. Her journey became an example of how accessibility and determination can challenge assumptions about what people with disabilities can achieve.
