Kochi: A new shipping service connecting India with key trading hubs in the Middle East has commenced operations at Cochin Port, opening another direct maritime link for exporters and importers in the region.
Launched by DP World Cochin, the new MGR IFR service connects Kochi and Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Maharashtra with Fujairah in the UAE, Sohar in Oman and Aden in Yemen. The service is expected to strengthen cargo connectivity between India and important markets across the Middle East.
The service will operate on a fortnightly basis along the Kochi–Jawaharlal Nehru Port–Fujairah–Aden route. As part of the new operation, the vessel MV Mars Virgo recently called at Kochi. MV Mars Zenith will also be deployed on the service, with both vessels capable of handling more than 500 TEUs per voyage.
The service will follow the Kochi–Nhava Sheva–Fujairah–Sohar–Aden–Kochi rotation, providing an additional shipping option for businesses moving containerised cargo between India and the Gulf region.
Boost for Kochi’s Container Trade
The launch comes as Kochi Port records strong growth in container handling. During April to August of the 2026-27 financial year, the port handled around 381,000 TEUs, representing an 18.53% increase compared with the corresponding period of the previous year.
August alone saw Kochi Port handle 97,952 TEUs, a 51% rise year-on-year. The continued growth in container volumes strengthens Kochi’s position as an important node in India’s east-west cargo movement network.
The new shipping connection could further support this momentum by giving exporters and importers an additional route to major Middle Eastern ports. Kochi’s location on India’s western coast also provides opportunities for the port to serve as a transit point for cargo moving between different parts of the country.
Wider Middle East Connectivity
One notable feature of the new service is its connection to ports located outside the Strait of Hormuz. Fujairah and Sohar provide access to important regional trade networks, while the Aden connection adds another gateway for cargo moving towards Yemen and surrounding markets.
For Indian businesses, the new service could provide greater flexibility in planning international shipments, particularly for companies trading with the UAE, Oman, Yemen and wider Middle Eastern markets.
The development also reflects the growing importance of direct and efficient maritime connectivity for India’s international trade. With container volumes at Kochi continuing to expand, additional services such as MGR IFR could help the port strengthen its role in regional supply chains.
