Consumers receiving subsidised LPG cylinders will face a new verification requirement from October 1, with the government making Aadhaar-based biometric authentication mandatory for availing the subsidy.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said the move is aimed at ensuring that LPG subsidies reach eligible beneficiaries and improving transparency and efficiency in the subsidy system. The verification is also expected to help identify and remove ineligible beneficiaries.
As of September 19, around 27.43 crore LPG consumers across the country were receiving cylinders at subsidised rates. About 89.9% of these consumers had already completed Aadhaar-based biometric authentication, leaving a significant number yet to complete the process.
Consumers who have already completed the verification can continue booking LPG cylinders as usual. Those who have not completed it will still be able to book cylinders, but they will not receive the subsidy until the biometric authentication is successfully completed.
The government has provided multiple options for completing the verification. Consumers can authenticate their Aadhaar details during cylinder delivery through the official mobile application used by the respective oil marketing company. They can also visit their LPG distributor’s office or complete the process themselves from home through the company’s official mobile application.
Indane customers can use the IndianOil ONE app, while Bharatgas customers can use Hello BPCL. HP Gas customers can complete the process through the HP PAY app. The Ministry said a video tutorial explaining the process is also available through the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana portal.
The latest requirement is part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen beneficiary verification and ensure that public funds allocated for LPG subsidies are directed to eligible consumers.
