Kerala’s poultry industry is entering a phase that could create significant opportunities for farmers, feed manufacturers, and investors as rising demand for chicken and eggs shines a spotlight on the state’s production potential.
With feed prices increasing sharply over the past month, poultry producers are facing higher operating costs, leading to an increase in the market prices of chicken and eggs. While consumers are feeling the impact, industry experts believe the situation also underlines the urgent need to strengthen Kerala’s domestic poultry ecosystem.
One of the biggest challenges is the state’s dependence on imported feed ingredients such as maize and soybean. Industry representatives say expanding local cultivation and feed manufacturing could reduce production costs, improve supply stability, and create new business opportunities for the agriculture and food processing sectors.
The state’s demand for eggs continues to grow steadily. Kerala consumes nearly two crore eggs every day, but local farms currently meet only around 20% of that requirement. The remaining demand is fulfilled through supplies from neighbouring states, leaving the market vulnerable to fluctuations in prices, transportation costs, and supply disruptions.
Industry leaders believe increasing local egg and poultry production could significantly reduce this dependency while creating employment across farming, logistics, feed production, and processing. Investments in modern poultry farms, hatcheries, and feed manufacturing facilities are also expected to improve long-term supply security.
Demand for poultry products has remained strong despite rising prices, supported by seasonal consumption patterns, educational institutions reopening, and limited availability of alternative protein sources. This sustained demand continues to present growth opportunities for producers willing to expand capacity.
The poultry sector is also encouraging greater collaboration between government agencies, farmers, and private enterprises to promote self-sufficiency. Industry stakeholders believe targeted investments, improved feed production, and better infrastructure can help Kerala build a more resilient poultry value chain.
As consumer demand continues to rise, the current market situation is increasingly being viewed not just as a pricing challenge but as an opportunity to accelerate domestic production, encourage agricultural innovation, and strengthen one of Kerala’s fastest-growing food sectors.
